仕事でも日常でも、言葉を選ぶたびに「自分の気持ちって、こんな薄っぺらいものだったっけ」とモヤっとすることがあると思います。言いたいことはあるのに、現代のスピード感に合わせて言葉がどんどん簡略化されていく感じがして、どこか置いていかれるような感覚です。 この本の古い表現に惹かれている人は、たぶん意味を知りたくてというより、言葉そのものの“深さ”を取り戻したいのだと思います。thou や shalt のような語り口に触れると、言葉が本来持っていた重みがゆっくり立ち上がってきて、自分の考え方まで少し静かになる。firmament や midst といった語感は、世界を大づかみに捉える視点を思い出させてくれますし、serpent や chaff のような象徴的な単語は、物事を比喩で考える余白をくれます。 もちろん、聖書を信仰の書として読む必要はありません。むしろ、日々の選択に少し疲れたときに、ただ古い英語のリズムに身を預けるだけで、思考のスピードが変わり、判断のクセがゆるむ感覚があるはずです。 現代の言葉だけだと息苦しさを覚える人や、もう少しゆっくり世界を理解したい人に刺さる一冊です。
